Compassion in Fashion

It Would be my Pleather to Demonstrate...
High style--cruelty free.

When I first checked out the Spring Fashion Trends as reported by Harper's Bazaar following New York Fashion Week, I cringed when I came to the "Leather Up" trend--as any compassionate fashionista would.

But, I wanted to create a set for the trend nonetheless. Not to in any way support or encourage the wearing of leather--far from it. I wanted to demonstrate that you can look just as stylish--more so, in my opinion--without the taking of a life.

And so, I present this ensemble which features vegan (faux) leather attire and accessories. Now, I didn't go all out in pleather the way the NYFW designers of these outfits did, but...I could. There are all kinds of faux/vegan leather options out there. All you gotta do is do what my mama said--you gotta shop around.

Be stylish in your own skin. Compassion--it's always in fashion.

Cheers & Happy Birthday to One Super Man!
On Thursday, April 18, 2013, the comic book world and a few folks in the real world marked the 75th anniversary of the birth of Superman.

The alter ego of Clark Kent was born in the imagination of two teenage boys in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. In fact, I now live in the house previously owned by the ex-wife and son of one of the creators.

Clark Kent/Superman embodies a lot of ideals that are just as valuable today as they were when the original concept for the character was developed. An ethical superhero who never killed the bad guy, who fought for truth and justice--not vengeance.

A stranger in our world. Different. Faster and stronger than any one else on the planet, yet he chooses to use that power for good and the betterment of others.

Of the classic superheroes, I think I would actually pick Superman as my favorite, and so I thought I'd create an ensemble honoring my No. 1.

...Although, to be fair, Spiderman and Batman are tied for second. I mean, a photographer and a billionaire philanthropist crime fighter...what's not to love about their origin stories.

So, without further adieu -- happy 75th birthday, Superman. You haven't aged a day...not really.

Pigs are Friends Not Food
Mint green paired with porcine pinky-peach are a popular color-combination trend this spring but keep those colors in your clothes and not on your table. In other words, skip the lamb, ham and colored eggs this Easter, and enjoy a meal crafted from the first fruits of spring instead--like asparagus, new potatoes, leeks and fennel--while you wear a pretty in pink-pig ensemble complete with compassionate messaging. If the weather is warm, pair the graphic tee with a sleeveless denim vest or wear longer sleeves to keep the chill at bay. Dress the outfit up with wedge sandals or keep kickin' it casual-like with bright colored canvas tennis shoes.

Bohemian (Black &) Raspberry

Bohemian (Black &) Raspberry
Inspired by a neutral blazer, the patterned skirt brought the Bohemian feel to the look. Pulling out the deep raspberry from the skirt as an accent gives it some punch. The faux-leather bag that combines two neutral tones with the raspberry ties it all toget

UNDERSTATED...Glam
A glamorous look doesn't have to mean you're dripping with diamonds and draped in satin -- just take a look at the lovely Marilyn Monroe in these backyard photos shot by the great Alfred Eisenstaedt. Even in a more casual ensemble, she could be stunning and give off an air of "Hollywood glam."

TO GET THE LOOK, start with classic lines and neutral colors in feel-good fabrics -- like cotton and linen -- that fit your body type well. Then, add just a hint of glamor with a pop of color or a purrfect print.

Paired with simple sandals (sporting a subtle leopard-look), this particular outfit would be great for a little shopping or a light lunch alfresco. Switch to va-va-voom pumps and grab a sparkly clutch to take the look from day to a not-quite casual evening out.

Of course, when you're rockin' the glam look, signature shades are a must -- day or night!

p.s. And a pair of diamond earrings ALWAYS adds a little star style. ;)
